Shakedown time in Baywide club rugby playoffs race

Two weeks out from semifinal time in Farmlands Co-operative Baywide club rugby only one Premier 1 team can sleep comfortably at night knowing they're playoffs-bound.

Te Puke Sports stand head and shoulders above the competition with a five from five winning record in the championship round, and on the strength of last week's 52-9 demolition of then second-placed Tauranga Sports can afford a degree of satisfaction over their current form.

An eight point lead over the team now in second, Te Puna, along with a comfortable run in to the playoffs in which they avoid any other top four teams, virtually guarantees them hosting rights in post season action.

They travel to Rotorua tomorrow to take on top eight cellar-dwellers Rotoiti, a side which farewelled its playoff hopes with last week's 55-20 defeat to Greerton Marist but will be looking to restore some pride.

For the remaining Premier 1 hopefuls, an anxious fortnight awaits.

Losers today will be either kissing goodbye to any prospects they had, if they haven't already, or nervously awaiting a last chance next week to redeem themselves and sneak into the post season party.

The Sulphur City hosts one match which will have a major impact on the top four. Fourth placed Whakarewarewa host second placed Te Puna, working hard to keep their minds on the game and not on the festivities afterwards to repay Matakana Island's hospitality when the two teams met there earlier in the season.

'We know it's going to be a big one after Te Puna hosted us over at Matakana Island,” Whaka coach Peter Smith says, 'and we'll put it on for them when they come over here this weekend. It's a big thing for us as our people, our team, club and community really want to reciprocate what Te Puna delivered for us.”

With a playoff spot almost guaranteed for the winner, both coaches are keeping their teams' eyes on the prize.

'The big focus for us is to try and go about our job,” Peter says. 'Tick the boxes and play to our strengths.

'But at the same time it's not about individual performance. We have put it on the boys to play for each other. To put their body on the line. There are obviously periods of the game when we're under pressure as well as times where you need to capitalise and put points on the board.”

Te Puna head coach Aidan Kuka believes the hard work they put in to beat Mt Maunganui last week has set them up well for the season climax.

'We've had a good look at ourselves in the last two weeks and have worked hard to get back into the winners circle. The Mount is a very good side and have a lot of round two experience so it was pleasing to get the win over them.”

Aidan says he wants to see his side get over the travel factor and start strongly.

'We want to start games better. It's going to be a difficult task to get off the bus at Puarenga Park and rip straight into it but we will give it a good go.

'Whakarewarewa are a well-balanced side with physical forwards and skilled backs so we're preparing for a tough battle,” Aidan says.

Tauranga Sports were back to the drawing board after their home thrashing at the hands of Te Puke last week, and will have matters to put right when they take on Rangataua at Te Ariki Park. They sit third currently but with another tough hurdle looming next week against Whakarewarewa a semifinal possie is far from certain.

The Maungatapu outfit have won just one of their second round engagements so far and are sitting seventh, but still see an outside chance of making the semis. That, along with their perennial desire to put one over the central city boys, should set up a stunner between them.

Two further teams clinging to playoff hopes by their fingertips meet in the remaining Premier 1 game at Greerton Park. The home side sit fifth, and take on defending champs Mt Manganui - currently sixth. The winner will keep their chances firmly alive while the loser waves theirs goodbye.

With just three points separating first from fifth on the Premier 2 table the race to their playoffs is wide open.

Te Teko meet Ngongataha in a top of the table clash which should lock in post season footy for the side that takes it out, while the winner of the match Arataki hosts against Opotoki, two more teams firmly in the semifinal hunt, will also be sitting pretty.

Fifth-placed Rangiuru will be looking to lift themselves into the top four when they take on battling Whakatane Marist at Te Puke's Centennial Park, while Marist St Michaels play Waikite for local bragging rights in a Sulphur City derby.

The Baywide women's comp takes a break this week ahead of the launch of their playoff series next week.
