What’s On: school holiday fun

Keeping the kids busy over the school holidays.

Good Morning, and if you have kids, welcome to the school holidays!

Today's weather isn't looking too flash with rain developing as we speak and heavy rain expected in the evening, as well as northwesterlies in the afternoon and evening. The rest of the week also seems quite similar.

If school holiday's sprung upon you out of nowhere no need to worry, we've got you covered.

Performing Arts Competitions

The Tauranga Performing Arts Competitions are returning to Baycourt from July 6-15, with around 900 young people competing in Highland dancing, tap dancing, modern dance, ballet, instrumental, piano, singing, speech and drama.

There are three sessions a day open to the public for a gold coin donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children, payable at the Addison Theatre door on the day.

Skate School

Skateschool is offering four public roller skating sessions at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre over the holidays.

The sessions will run from 1pm-3pm on Monday, July 9, Thursday, July 12, Monday, July 16 and Thursday, July 19.

Skates and protective gear are provided. The cost is $10 each or $35 for a family pass. Spectators and under-fives attend free. All ages and abilities welcome.

Gymnastics

Impact Gym Sport Academy is offering a gymnastics holiday programme at ASB Arena at Baypark for children who want to have a go at gymnastics or for those that are already doing gymnastics and wish to fine-tune their skills.

The three-hour sessions cost $20 and consist of working through five stations of gymnastic activities.

Art workshop

Children aged four to 12 years can attended an ‘Art for Miles' workshop at the Tauranga Art Gallery to create a sculptural portrait from unfired clay, inspired by Cat Thompson's ceramic artwork ‘I cede to you'. Thompson's work is featured in The Miles Art Awards 2018 exhibition.

The sessions cost $20 and are available from Monday, July 9 to Friday, July 20 in specific age group sessions. To book visit: www.artgallery.org.nz/book

Lego Exhibition

The Brickman Wonders of the World Lego Exhibition is on at Baypark Stadium from 10am-4.30pm daily until Sunday, July 22.

The interactive exhibition is made entirely from Lego bricks and includes world famous landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe, the Empire State Building with King Kong, Big Ben, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and even a Lego version of Michelangelo's Statue of David.

Creative workshop

Music, art and film are coming together in Te Puke next week as part of a school holiday youth event sponsored by Creative BOP.

Rapper and artist Ethan Zonneveld, aka Zonny, a will be creating a wall mural at the Vector Group Creatives Centre on Oxford Street from July 12-15.

He will be sharing his story and tips on street art and will put on a small show of some of his songs.

BOP Film's Lochie Barton (photography) and Jaden Charrington (film) will be filming Zonny on July 12-13 as he creates his work and will also be sharing tips and tricks for using digital media.

Young people are welcome to drop into the centre any time between 11am-4pm.

Katikati will have a free Whanau Fun Day Out on Wednesday, July 18 from 10.30am-1.30pm at Katikati Rugby Club on Fairview Road.

Organised by the Katikati Under 6 Action Group, the kids expo will provide an opportunity to meet your community services as well as take part in face-painting, games and activities.

Food stalls will be available and there will be spot prizes and give-aways.

Library activities

Get along to your local library for some free holiday fun with Tauranga Libraries. Children aged three-to-six years can enjoy stories and songs about sparkly wands and use their imagination to make one of their own.

Children aged seven-to-10 years can listen to stories about stars and make origami and/or woven stars.

For children aged eight years and older there will be a coding workshop called Moon Hack, and for all ages there's a workshop called Maara Kai, where children can plant seeds to take home. To register pop into your local library, call: 07 577 7177 or visit: library.tauranga.govt.nz
