Expect a few showers today

In today's weather we are expecting a few showers, with some heavy in the afternoon. The strong westerlies should be easing by the evening.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 7 degrees. Humidity is 81 per cent.

Low tide is at 9am and high tide is at 3.20pm. There's a sea swell of 1.3m with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.07pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 7.30 and 9.30am this morning.

In NZ history on this day in 1986 the Homosexual Law Reform Bill passed. Wellington Central MP Fran Wilde's private member's bill, which removed criminal sanctions against consensual male homosexual practices, was passed by 49 votes to 44.

In world history on this day in 118 Hadrian, Rome's new emperor, made his entry into the city. In 455 Avitus, the Roman military commander in Gaul, became Emperor of the West. In 1900 the Commonwealth of Australia was established by an act of British Parliament, uniting the separate colonies under a federal government.

In 1942 Anne Frank and her family went into hiding in the attic above her father's office in an Amsterdam warehouse. In 1943 American and British forces made an amphibious landing on Sicily.

Today is the birthday of Elias Howe. Born in 1819, he was the inventor of the sewing machine. It's also the birthday of journalist, writer and radio commentator Dorothy Thompson, who was born in 1894. Dorothy once said "There is nothing to fear except the persistent refusal to find out the truth, the persistent refusal to analyse the cause of happenings."
