Teenagers fire at police

Teenagers shooting in the backyard of a Hamilton home then turned their fire at police.

Police were called to Ross Crescent in Fairfield around 10.20am on Monday after reports of people firing an air-rifle at a back fence.

Officers arriving to check out the call were then fired upon themselves, says Waikato police Senior Sergeant Simon Cherry.

"An officer going into the address heard the shots - no-one was injured."

Several shots were fired, Cherry said, but none struck officers.

Police set up cordons around the home off Heaphy Tce.

Two teenage boys emerged from the house shortly after and handed themselves in, he said.

Police arrested three males aged 15, 16 and 17.

They will be charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

"It's very disappointing when police officers are trying to do their job without having to deal with young men firing pellets at them.

"It could have been very dangerous. They have been arrested and charged - it's not something they want on their record."

Yay a warning for the future . Lets see if the authorities can handle these three in such a way that they will never commit a firearms offence again. Highly unlikely, but worth a shot .. Ha ha ..
