Auckland and Coromandel have been issued weather warnings as heavy rain and strong winds coincide with king tides.

The highest tide will be arriving along the east coast at about 9am.

A heavy rain warning is in place for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne while a strong wind warning has been issued for Auckland and Coromandel.

Severe weather also brought down power lines and cut electricity to 77 homes near Dargaville in the early hours of this morning. Supply is expected to be restored shortly.

Metservice meteorologist April Clark says the tide coinciding with the worst of the weather could cause flooding.

"That's adding to those king tides and the low pressure which also means the sea levels raised a bit, so that's some coastal inundation we're looking at there."

Rain has moved down from Northland and is now over Auckland and Coromandel, it will move down toward Bay of Plenty and Gisborne from about midday.

Northland received its heaviest rain in the early hours of the morning.

"Kerikeri is the one that's had the most, in the urban areas - so that got 48.6 millimetres in the last 18 hours, whereas Auckland is just getting their really heavy rain now, so in the last three hours they've had about 15.4 millimetres."

Parts of Northland had power outages from storm damage.

Seventy-seven homes are without power in the Tokatoka area, near Dargaville, after an 11,000 vault power line came down at 4.15am.

It was expected to be restored by about 9am.

Last night 1250 were without power in Mangawhai north of Auckland for three hours when trees fell onto the power lines at Moirs Point.

April says Coromandel Peninsula had the most rain so far with 106.5 millimetres in the last 24 hours recorded up in the pinnacles.

She says strong easterly winds were also battering Northland and Auckland.

"Hokianga harbour got 105 kilometre per hour easterly winds, Whangaparoa's getting 81 kilometre per hour winds. Out in the harbour in Auckland they're getting really high wind gusts - 113 kilometre per hour."

She says the weather was moving faster down the country than what was initially forecast.

"People may be seeing the rain a little bit earlier and it will be clearing a little bit earlier."

The weather was expected to clear by early-to-mid afternoon.
