Fine spells with a chance of showers

In today's weather we are expecting fine spells but with a chance of showers. Northerlies turning westerly in the afternoon.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 8 degrees. Humidity is 100 per cent.

High tide is at 9am and low tide is at 3.10pm. There's a sea swell of 1.5m with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.11pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 7 and 10am.

In NZ history on this day in 1965 New Zealand artillery opened fire in Vietnam. New Zealand gunners from 161 Field Battery fired New Zealand's first shots of the Vietnam War from their Bien Hoa base near Saigon.

In world history on this day in 1774 Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed the Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainardji, ending their six-year war. In 1940 Adolf Hitler ordered preparations for the invasion of England.

In 1945 the United States detonated the first atomic bomb in a test. In 1969 Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy, Florida, heading for a landing on the moon. In 1999 a private plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Jr. was lost over the waters off Martha's Vineyard.

Today is the birthday of journalist Ida Bell Wells. Born in 1862 Ida once said "The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”
