Rainy then clearing today

In today's forecast occasional rain will be developing in the morning but clearing in the afternoon. The northerly will be dying out in the afternoon.

It's a three-clothing layer day with a high of 14 and an overnight low of 6 degrees. Humidity is 100 per cent.

High tide is at 11.10am and low tide is at 5.20pm. There's a sea swell of .3m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.25pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 4 and 6pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1872 Anthony Trollope arrived for a New Zealand tour. Anthony Trollope, one of the Victorian era's most famous novelists, landed at Bluff at the start of a two-month tour of New Zealand. In 1941 a Finnish sailing ship was seized as a war prize. Five days after its arrival in Wellington, the four-masted barque Pamir was seized in prize by the New Zealand government.

In world history on this day in 1492 Christopher Columbus left Spain on his voyage to the new world. In 1553 Mary Tudor, the new Queen of England, entered London. In 1610 Henry Hudson of England discovered a great bay on the east coast of Canada and named it for himself. In 1914 Germany declared war on France. In 1958 the first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus, passed under the North Pole. In 2004 on this day the Statue of Liberty's pedestal reopened to visitors after being closed following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Today is the birthday of English poet Rupert Brooke. Born in 1887, he once wrote "I know what things are good: friendship and work and conversation. These I shall have."
