Day of ’differing emotions’ for Tauranga golfers

It was a day of differing emotions for Tauranga-based pros Mark Brown and Kieran Muir in the final round of the Fiji International played at sumptuous Natadola Bay on Sunday.

Brown played a nicely controlled round in the beautiful Fijian sunshine, with a blustery sea breeze adding an extra dimension for the players.

He had a bogey and birdie in his opening nine holes and then played mistake-free golf through his back nine to sign for a par-72.

Brown had a successful month in Asia in July and his efforts in Fiji saw him finish in a tie for 18th with several players including fellow Kiwi Harry Bateman.

It has been a roller coaster of a week for Muir.

He had the excitement of a rare hole in one in his third round yesterday but sadly for the Omokoroa player there was little to get excited about in his final round.

He began with a double bogey and never recovered sadly. He finished with a 6-over 78 for a four-round finish of 7-over in a tie for 58th.

But the jovial Muir, who had Tauranga Golf Club senior pennant player Josh Presley on his bag, will take plenty from this week.

And no one can take his hole in one moment off him.

The other Tauranga golfer in the field Josh Geary missed the cut mainly down to two wayward holes in his first round that cost him seven shots.

At the top end of the leaderboard, Masterton pro Ben Campbell had an exciting race to the title with India's Gaganjeet Bhullar, four-time Major winner Ernie Els and Australian Anthony Quayle.

The margin never exceeded two shots between them throughout the afternoon with Bhullar finally winning by a shot from Quayle, with Campbell two back from Bhullar in a tie for third with four-time Major winner Ernie Els.
