In NZ history on this day in 1908 the first train ran the length of the main trunk line. In 1991 the much-loved entertainer Billy T. James died of heart failure at the age of 43.

In 1997 Beatrice Faumuina won an athletics world championship gold. Beatrice Faumuina became the first New Zealander to win an event at a World Athletics Championships when she threw the discus 66.82 m at Athens in 1997.

In world history on this day in 1888 Theophilus Van Kannel of Philadelphia received a patent for the revolving door. In 1922 the Irish Republican Army cut the cable link between the United States and Europe at Waterville landing station. In 1971 Apollo 15 returned to Earth.

The mission to the moon had marked the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle. In 1974 Philippe Petit performed a high wire act between the twin towers of the World Trade Center 417 m in the air. In 1976 the US Viking 2 spacecraft went into orbit around Mars.

Today is the birthday of Jimmy Wales, an American businessman and co-founder of Wikipedia. Born in 1966, he once said "Things work well when a group of people know each other, and things break down when it's a bunch of random people interacting."
