In today's forecast we are expecting rain and northerlies.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 8 degrees. Humidity is 100 per cent.

Low tide is at 9.30am and high tide is at 3.50pm. There's a sea swell of 1.6m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.30pm.

If you're going fishing today the next best fish bite time is between 8 and 10pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1915 the Wellington Battalion captured Chunuk Bair. The high point of the New Zealand effort at Gallipoli, the attack on Chunuk Bair underlined the leadership qualities of Lieutenant-Colonel William Malone.

In world history on this day in 1306 King Wenceslas of Poland is murdered. In 1876 Thomas Edison patented the mimeograph. In 1899 the first household refrigerating machine was patented. In 1963 2.6 million pounds was stolen in England's 'Great Train Robbery".

In 1969 at a zebra crossing in London, photographer Iain Macmillan took the iconic photo that became the cover image of the Beatles' album Abbey Road.

In 1978 Pioneer-Venus 2 was launched to probe the atmosphere of Venus. In 1989 NASA Space Shuttle Columbia began its eighth flight, NASA's 30th shuttle mission.

Today is the birthday of American physician and surgeon Bob Smith. Born in 1879 he co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous and once said "Our 12 Steps, when simmered down to the last, resolve themselves into the words love and service. We understand what love is and we understand what service is. So let's bear those two things in mind."
