A severe weather watch remains in place for Tauranga this morning, with the MetService forecasting thunderstorms throughout the day.

Periods of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms are being forecast for the area as a low, which has moved in from the Tasman Sea, is moving across the region.

'The watch is for the possibility of rain approaching short duration warning criteria in the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne north of Te Puia Springs and northwest Nelson associated with this front,” says the weather organisation.

'There is also the possibility of westerly winds approaching severe gale in exposed parts of Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato and Bay of Plenty west of Te Puke.”
