Karangahake Gorge to close for rock blasting

SH2, between Paeroa and Waihi, will be closed for rock blasting tonight.

People travelling between Waihi and Paeroa are being advised to find an alternative route other than State Highway 2 tonight.

From 9pm until 3am, SH2 will be closed to allow contractors to blast overhanging rock from above the highway in the Karangahake Gorge.

'There will be cordons at Paeroa and Waitawheta Bridge,” says a statement from the roading agency.

'The road will close from 9pm, and open as soon as debris has been cleared – possibly single lane – as soon as possible.”

Alternative routes are via SH27/29 over the Kaimai Range. Or via SH25/25A.

The Transport Agency urges people to make sure they are through the gorge before 9pm, and to check on the website www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/regions/3 before attempting to travel in this area.
