Gold, Springboks and the weather

In today's forecast we are expecting cloudy periods. A few afternoon showers, then becoming fine in the evening with the brisk southwesterly easing.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 17 and an overnight low of 9 degrees. Humidity is 56 per cent.

Low tide is at 10am and high tide is at 4.30 pm (Tay Street times). There's a sea swell of .7m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.56pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 9 and 11pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1868 Von Tempsky was killed in South Taranaki at Te Ngutu-o-te-manu. Gustavus von Tempsky was killed during an assault on Tītokowaru's south Taranaki pā. His exploits during the New Zealand Wars had made the Prussian soldier of fortune a folk hero for many European settlers.

In 1909 New Zealand's heaviest gold nugget was discovered at Ross on the West Coast. Weighing 3.09 kg, the nugget was named the 'Honourable Roddy' after the minister of mines, Roderick McKenzie.

In 1921 Springboks played New Zealand Maoris for the first time. A South African journalist was outraged when white spectators supported the New Zealand Maoris rugby team against the touring Springboks at Napier.

In world history on this day in 1888 an incubator was used for the first time on a premature infant. In 1912 French aviator Roland Garros set an altitude record of 13,200 feet. In 1923 the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) was formed. In 1936 the last thylacine, a carnivorous marsupial named Benjamin, died alone in its cage at the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania.

Today is the birthday of Anna Marie Robertson, known as Grandma Moses. Born in 1860 the American folk painter started her career at age 78, and was best known for her paintings of rural life. She once said "I look out the window sometimes to seek the colour of the shadows and the different greens in the trees, but when I get ready to paint I just close my eyes and imagine a scene."
