What’s on? Books and culture, to worthy causes

File photo.

Good morning SunLive Readers, and welcome back to another Saturday.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... The weather is heating up, and with warmer weather it seems, there comes more events!

This weekend is packed full of things to do, so if you were thinking of having a quiet one I say call a raincheck on it because the city is buzzing with activities.

From 9am, the students out at Otumoetai College will be hosting their Bookarama. Other that the fact you're likely to find a great read, it's actually all in the name of a really great cause.

For the past 32 years the biennial book event has helped fundraise for extra facilities for the college.

Stop by to the College at 105 Windsor Road and do your part to nurture our future leaders.

Then, kicking off at 11am is the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. This is taking place on the Strand all day until 3pm and it's set to be packed full of authentic food, activities and performances.

The best thing about it all is that the event is free, so drop by and check it out.

And more on worthy causes, Mount Maunganui is playing host to an event that touches the hearts of many who have lost.

The annual Hope Walk is on, and if you hadn't already heard about this fantastic event it's hope is doing its bit to raise awareness of suicide.

Anyone who would like to support the cause is invited to come along and join in. The walk will begin at Memorial Park from 1pm, heading to Sulphur Point.

Further down the road from this, a peaceful protest is being planned for one of the most controversial issues facing New Zealand at the moment, 1080.

The event has been planned as part of Operation 1080, which is a series of protests that have been held at towns throughout the nation to stand up against the use of 1080 as a means of predator control within New Zealand forests.

Organisers of the event insist the day is not about being radical, rather, sending a calm, collected and peaceful message about why they insist the method is not acceptable.

It's kicking off from 2pm at Mount Drury, so show your support by being there.

And in case this long list of events and activities still doesn't peak your interest... You can check out our listings below, have a great weekend!
