Bay of Plenty rugby's under 19s head to Taupo for the annual Jock Hobbs Memorial tournament with big hopes of a strong showing – including perhaps going all the way to the title.

The tournament, named after the legendary All Black captain and New Zealand Rugby Union administrator who succumbed to leukaemia in 2012, kicks off tomorrow at Owen Delany Park, with the Bay of Plenty's first game against Hurricanes region second seeds Hawke's Bay at 10.45.

The baby Steamers have no shortage of confidence going into the tournament after nailing the Chiefs region top seeding thanks to their 94-0 demolition of Taranaki and last week's 36-17 defeat of Waikato, which consigned their cross-Kaimai cousins to the lower championship division of the competition.

Chiefs top seeds Bay of Plenty and Taranaki will contest the Graham Mourie Cup for the premiership tier of the tournament, while Waikato and Counties Manukau are chasing the Michael Jones Trophy at the championship level.

New Zealand under 20 representative Kaleb Trask has been released from the Steamers and is heading to Taupo with the team. He lines up at fullback for tomorrow's match.

'We're really happy with how we're tracking as a team,” says head coach Mike Rogers.

'To win the Chiefs region two years in a row is a real achievement for our team and union.

'Our next challenge is against Hawke's Bay in the quarter final, they're a quality side full of talented players. They play an attacking brand of rugby with lots of variation so we're under no illusions how much pressure they're capable of putting us under.

'It would be great to see a large Bay of Plenty contingent in Taupo supporting our team this coming Sunday and throughout the tournament.”

Following tomorrow's quarterfinals the semifinals are on Wednesday and the finals next Saturday.
