Quake jolts central New Zealand

A powerful earthquake has been felt in central New Zealand.

Geonet originally recorded four moderate earthquakes from Te Kaha in the north, to Arthur's Pass in the south between 4.20pm and 4.24pm.

However, it later retracted these, and a magnitude 6.9 quake was found to have struck south of the Kermadec islands at 4.19pm.

The Kermadec islands are situated north of the North Island.

After an initial assessment, Civil Defence has said there is no tsunami risk for New Zealand.
