State Highway 2 is open following a fatal crash.
Three vehicles - a car, a 4x4 and a truck - were involved in the crash near Apata Station Road just before 5pm on Monday.
"The truck caught on fire and so did one of the cars, says a police spokepserson.
"The person that died was in the car that caught fire."
The highway was re-opened around 11.30pm.
NZTA says a temporary speed limit of 50kph is in place until maintenance contractors repair the road surface.
The serious crash unit is investigating the crash.
