SH29 open after fatal crash and ’serious incident’

State Highway 29 is open this morning following a fatal crash.

The highway was shut down when a car and truck crashed near Old Kaimai Road just after 2pm.

The highway wad open around 6pm but had to be closed again due a another "serious incident" on around 3am.

Police says one person was killed in the crash.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it's happened near the intersection of SH29 and Old Kaimai Road.

"It looks as though a transporter truck and a car have crashed."

A witness at the scene says there are five police cars, firefighters and St John paramedics at the scene.

Another person who drove past the crash says there was "just a total mess on the road".

A post from the NZTA says SH29 was closed at 3am due to a serious incident in the Lower Kaimai area.

SunLive has contacted police for more information about what happened this morning.

NZTA says the highway was re-opened around 5am this morning.
