The odd shower or two

In today's forecast we are expecting the weather to be often cloudy, with the odd shower turning to rain in the evening. Also easterly breezes.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 13 degrees. Humidity is 94 per cent.

High tide is at 1.20pm and low tide is at 7.30pm (Tay Street times). There's a sea swell of .4m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 6.04pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is tomorrow morning between 6.30am and 8.30am.

On this day in NZ history in 1937 the first state house was opened in Miramar. Most of the Labour Cabinet helped the first tenants move into 12 Fife Lane in Miramar, Wellington. Even Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage carried a cumbersome dining table through a cheering throng.

In world history on this day in 1793 George Washington laid the foundation stone for the U.S. Capitol. In 1830 Tom Thumb, the first locomotive built in the United States, lost a nine-mile race in Maryland to a horse.

In 1929 Charles Lindbergh took off on a 10,000 mile air tour of South America. In 1973 East and West Germany and The Bahamas were admitted to the United Nations. In 1977 Voyager I took the first photo of Earth and the Moon together. In 1998 ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) was formed to coordinate unique identifying addresses for Websites worldwide.

Today is the birthday of English essayist and poet Samuel Johnson. Born in 1709, he once said "The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good."
