Otzi the Iceman, Suffrage and the weather

In today's forecast we are expecting a cloudy day, with one or two showers possible. Also southeasterly winds.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 19 and an overnight low of 13 degrees. Humidity is 70 per cent.

High tide is at 2.20pm and low tide is at 8.30pm (Tay Street times). There's a sea swell of 1.8m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 6.05pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 7pm and 9pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1893 NZ women won the right to vote. When the governor, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant all adult women the right to vote in parliamentary elections.

In world history on this day in 1783 the first hot-air balloon was sent aloft in Versailles, France with animal passengers including a sheep, a rooster, and a duck.

In 1957 the first underground nuclear test took place in Nevada. In 1982 the first documented emoticons, were posted on the Carnegie Mellon University Bulletin Board System by Scott Fahlman.

In 1991 German hikers near the Austria-Italy border discovered the naturally preserved mummy of a man from about 3,300 BC; Europe's oldest natural human mummy, he is dubbed Otzi the Iceman because his lower half was encased in ice.

Today is the birthday of Bergen Evans, educator and author who wrote the Natural History of Nonsense. Born in 1904 Bergen once said 'We may be through with the past, but the past is not through with us. Ideas of the Stone Age exist side by side with the latest scientific thought. For example giant planes throb through the stratosphere, but half their passengers are wearing magic amulets and are protected from harm by voodoo incantations.”
