Council must provide fair representation

B Johnson (September 14) is unreasonable in his criticism of local Mayor Garry Webber. The Mayor has to work with local Maori, and he is required by the Treaty of Waitangi partnership, which is now law, to try to give them fair representation.

B Johnson has no elected responsibility so he can tell people to defy the Treaty of Waitangi and fair representation for Maori, but he is campaigning to defy the law.

The poll result opposing Maori wards showed simply that Pakeha voters thought that Maori wards were an extra privilege for Maori and did nothing for Pakeha. The poll result did not change the Treaty responsibility for the council to provide fair representation for Maori.

Well well here we go again with Peter Dey back to making up stories.Treaty of Waitangi partnership. No such thing. How can Mr Johnstone defy the law. Maori Wards just on 79% of the people rejected Maori Wards not because Maori will have extra privilege but because some guy and his mates around Te Puke and others at KatiKati said every body must be treated the same.Whats wrong with that.Time Mr Dey that you start living in the real world like the rest of us and stop walking around with your hand out looking for the free lunches

Dey continues on his wary way. We all know local authorities, the community have had legislation forced on them in regards Maori, just as we all know those obligations are attempted at being met, with a whole raft of 'special considerations', consultations, appointments and committees. Frankly, Maori and non-maori considerations are lacking in integrity. I note WBOPDC has decided NOT to use STV voting which without doubt enhances representation opportunities for minorities, and would have been consistent with Tauranga City Council and the BOPDHB - It seems WBOPDC put self preservation before enhanced representation outcomes. PS: Mr Dey, many Maori also OPPOSE Maori Wards.
