In the weather forecast today we are expecting rain to clear in the morning and the weather to become fine. Also westerlies dying out.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 19 and an overnight low of 8 degrees. Humidity is 88 per cent.

High tide is at 1pm and low tide at 7.10pm.(Tay Street times). There's a swell of 0.1m and water temperature is 15 degrees. Sunset today is at 7.16pm.

If you're going fishing, the best fish bite time is 6-8pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1941 New Zealand Spitfire pilot Carlyle Everiss heroically sacrificed his life to save the Scottish village of Cowie from serious damage.

In 1986 'Slice of Heaven' hit no.1. Written for the movie Footrot Flats: the dog's tale, based on an iconic New Zealand cartoon series, Dave Dobbyn's hit single featured reggae band Herbs singing an unaccompanied cappella. It topped the charts for eight weeks.

In world history on this day in 1909 Orville Wright set an altitude record, flying at 1,600 feet. In 1931 aerial circus star Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, Jr. set off to complete the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean from Misawa City, Japan.

In 1950 the comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schultz, made its first appearance in newspapers. In 1964 scientists announced findings that smoking can cause cancer. In 2001 NATO backed US military strikes in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Today is the birthday of Annie Leibovitz, photographer whose subjects include John Lennon and the Rolling Stones. Born in 1949, she once said "I wish that all of nature's magnificence, the emotion of the land, the living energy of place could be photographed."
