Athletes aim for titles at the Gymnastics Champs

Bay of Plenty athletes will be competing at the 2018 New Zealand Gymnastics Championships, starting tomorrow.

Seventy Six athletes that make up the Bay of Plenty team will be competing from October 3 till October 6 at the ASB Arena.

The athletes come from all over the Bay to form the team with athletes from ARGOS, Impact, Mid-Island Gymsport and Te Puke Gymsport.

From those four clubs, there are 28 women and men artisitc athletes, 10 aerobics athletes, eight rhythmic athletes and 30 trampoline and tumbling athletes.

The athletes have been preparing for the championships all year long, as their season runs from October to October, says a statement provided to SunLive ahead of the championships.

'These girls train 16 hours a week with total commitment and dedication to the sport and everyone has the potential to do extremely well, and we hope to take out a title again.”

More than 1000 athletes will be competing across five sports during these four days, with gymnasts representing the bay.

'When our athletes achieve their personal bests, which in our view makes them all champions.”

The four day competition kicks off with an opening ceremony on Wednesday October 3 at 3.30pm.

Competition runs through till Saturday October 6 with a closing ceremony at 6pm.
