Stolen vehicle in Tauranga police chase

Police arrested the driver at the corner of Devonport Road and Elizabeth Street. Video by Robert Harris.

The driver of an alleged stolen vehicle led police on a chase through Tauranga this afternoon.

Police swarmed the corner of Devonport Road and Elizabeth Street as a fleeing vehicle drove into the dead-end section of Elizabeth Street, just before 3.30pm.

Cameron Fenton first reported the vehicle to police when he noticed it driving erratically on the Matamata-side of the Kaimai Range.

'It pulled out and tried to overtake a truck. It's driving was just crap. I tried to call *555 to report it, but wasn't able to get through.

'I had the car's number plate saved in my phone and decided to look it up on the car jam website and found it had just been reported stolen.”

That's when Cameron called 111 and reported it to police.

Cameron says he's had a vehicle stolen and knows how hard it is to get back.

'The driving was crap, for lack of a better description. The car had two young men inside, they looked like they were in their mid-to-late teens.”

Cameron followed the vehicle to the Welcome Bay lights, at which point a police car managed to get in behind it.

'That's when it took off towards 15th Ave.”

A police spokesperson says police chase the driver of the stolen vehicle and the pursuit ended in a minor collision.

Police say there were no injuries and the driver was arrested.

One time when the road works in the CBD worked to the police's advantage. I hope those two accidently tripped on the way to the police car and got a bit of a wake up, arrogant selfish attitude and don't care how may people they inconvenience on the way

Harsher sentencing

Its about time criminals knew the full force of the law. There are too many of them believing they can get away from the police, causing crashes and injury and everyone up in arms about how police shouldn't give chase. Well what if that was your car? I know I would want them caught and punished. But wait, its ok, they will most likely get restorative justice because of their age (ie a slap on the wrist) and live to steal again...
