Hamilton police are investigating a report of an attempted abduction of a young girl in the suburb of Hillcrest on Friday afternoon.

A police media spokesperson says a man allegedly driving a white car, possibly a hatchback, approached the girl on McCracken Avenue just after 4pm.

"The girl was pulled into the car, then pushed out again when a family member came out of a house onto the footpath.

"Police would like to hear from anyone in McCracken Avenue or the wider Hillcrest area around the time of this incident, who may have witnessed something which could assist our investigation.
