Emergency Services were called to the intersection of Macloughlin Drive and Valley Road just before midnight.

A police spokesperson says there were reports of power lines being down on the road.

'One caller said their power had gone off.”

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says that the power was out for an hour and a half.

'The power lines were down and a big flash of light was seen coming into Te Puke at the time of the crash.”

The caller who lives down the road from the incident says when they arrived home there was no power and the fire service hadn't arrived yet.

'About 10 minutes later there were flashing lights.”

'I wandered down for a look and many people were gathered around and I saw the car connected to the pole just down the street and a big power line laying on the road.”

'The power pole the car had crashed into was almost fallen on the road.”
