Tauranga needs rail system

Re ‘Decent transport system needed' (The Weekend Sun, September 28).

The writer stated "By golly, do I have to point it out? All of those who choose to live outside the city but want to work in it should have a decent rail system with the appropriate amount of stations and car parks.” I have, for a long time, sat in all the traffic gazing at all the rail lines sitting idle, thinking ‘why, oh why, don't the council look at the rail?'

We need an alternative transport system, like all cities that grow. Rail comes into the city from Te Puke, Omokoroa, Otumoetai, the Matapihi rail bridge, and Maungatapu. With stations and parking in those areas people could park cars and head into the city, travel back, pick up their cars and drive home as I, and many Wellingtonians, have done for years.

Also, with the price of petrol, who wants to be sitting in traffic burning up petrol? I have not been elected to TCC so do not understand all the costs, etc. Watching all the very long log trains going through the city seems a great cost for so little use.
