Members of the Maketu Coastguard won big at last night's 2018 Coastguard National Awards of Excellence, held in Wellington.

The volunteer crew walked away with two awards, including Coastguard National Unit of the year and Community Relations Unit of the year.

President of the Maketu Coastguard, Shane Beech, says he is over the moon and completely blown away.

'It was totally unexpected. We knew that we were in the running but to actually take it out overall, we were ecstatic. It's fantastic.”

Shane says one of the reasons they took out the community relations award is due to their efforts in the community.

'We are involved in the YES programme, things like the Rena watch, which was looking after Astrolabe and supplying a safety vessel out there. Other things were obviously we do bar crossings, flares and extinguisher evenings and a few other activities like that.”

Shane continued to say that tomorrow night's training will be a relaxed one to celebrate with the members that weren't able to make it down to Wellington to receive the awards.

'I also want to acknowledge the community as well because without the community support we wouldn't be there.”

The big award of the night for Shane was winning Coastguard National Unit of the year.

'That one was a big one for us. That acknowledges us standing out above and beyond. I am rapt.”
