Urewera, Mata Hari and the weather

In NZ history this day in 1877 former Governor Grey becomes Premier. Grey played a central role in 19th-century New Zealand politics, serving two terms as governor before entering Parliament to fight Julius Vogel's plans to abolish the provinces. He was the first of just two men who have held both positions.

In 1942 New Zealand coastwatchers were executed by the Japanese. Seventeen New Zealand coastwatchers and five civilians captured in the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati) during the Second World War were beheaded at Betio, Tarawa.

In 2007 there were 'Anti-terror' raids in Urewera. Citing the Terrorism Suppression Act, police arrested 18 people in raids linked to alleged weapons-training camps near the Bay of Plenty township of Rūātoki.

In world history on this day in 1582 the Gregorian (or New World) calendar was adopted in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal; and the preceding ten days were lost to history.

In 1783 Francois Pilatre de Rozier made the first manned flight in a hot air balloon. The first flight was let out to 82 feet, but over the next few days the altitude increased up to 6,500 feet.

In 1878 Thomas A. Edison founded the Edison Electric Light Co. In 1917 Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan Mata Hari was executed by firing squad at Vincennes, outside Paris, on charges of spying for the German Empire during World War I.

In 1924 a German ZR-3 flew 5000 miles, the furthest Zeppelin flight to date.

In 1990 Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the USSR, received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in making his country more open and reducing Cold War tensions. In 1997 Andy Green of the UK became the first person to break the sound barrier in the Earth's atmosphere, driving the ThrustSSC supersonic car to a record 763 mph (1,228 km/h). In 2003 China launched its first manned space mission, Shenzhou I.

In 2008 the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 733.08 points, the second-largest percentage drop in the Dow's history.

Today is the birthday of Roman poet Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro). Born in 70 BC, he once wrote "Love conquers all things; let us too surrender to Love" and "They can conquer who believe they can".
