Thunderstorm risk for Bay of Plenty

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

A front crosses the North Island from the west this morning, followed by a trough this afternoon, bringing periods of rain or showers to most places, according to the MetService.

'There is some instability associated with this front and there is the possibility for a thunderstorm to develop with this system, particularly in the morning, along with some gusty winds,” says meteorologist Tui McInnes.

'Because this front has this instability it paves the way for strong winds to get down to the surface and makes things a bit blustery if one does pop up.”

However, the risk is isolated, says Tui.

'It's unlikely that most people will experience one because of the way they tend to develop, however that risk is widespread.

'You can't say exactly where they would form but we're looking all the way from Wellsford, right down to Napier.”

The thunderstorms, should they occur, could bring about 10 to 25mm of rain per hour, hail of about 10 to 20mm in diameter and strong wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/hr.
