Take a trip through centuries of classical music with Bay of Plenty Symphonia's Miscellany concert this month.

The concert will feature music ranging from late 18th century classical up to the 1920s, encompassing a miscellany of styles and sounds as well as featuring wonderful flute soloist, Bridget Douglas.

BOP Symphonia committee member Maggie Gething says: 'Mozart's sparkling overture to the opera Così fan Tutte opens the concert with a flourish. Some would even call it frivolous, as it introduces the somewhat farcical story of fiancée swapping.”

'By contrast, the 1926 Flute Concerto by Carl Nielsen reflects the modernistic trends of the time. Although it may be new to many in the audience, it has arguably become the top concerto in the flute repertoire.”

Soloist Bridget Douglas is principal flute with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and says she is thrilled to have the opportunity to perform this quirky work for the first time.

Bridget is well known to NZSO regulars for participating in preconcert talks, as well as her fabulous playing. Hearing her solo performance is an experience not to be missed.

'Beethoven's 1st Symphony is the ultimate in easy listening,” says Maggie. 'This work was written not long after ‘Così', and has been described as a sort of cross between a short, elegant Mozart symphony and Beethoven's later, more romantic symphonies.”

Finally, it's back to the 20th century with Summer Evening - an evocative piece by Zoltán Kodály.
