Tauranga to join second nationwide Courts strike

Tauranga court staff picketing at their first strike in September.

Tauranga court staff will join others throughout the country in a second nationwide strike this afternoon.

Courts across New Zealand are expected to be disrupted for a full half-day from 12.30pm to 5pm when PSA members at the Ministry of Justice host strikes.

Earlier this year PSA members hosted similar action as a way to highlight 'fundamental pay issues”.

A handful staff members gathered on the corner of Cameron Road and Mclean Street outside the court house during the strike, waving signs and flags gathering the public's attention.

Today, the action follows the Ministry's failure to win an interim injunction on rolling strikes at the Employment Court in Auckland on Monday.

A strong decision was delivered supporting the right of workers to strike.

'The Ministry has a history of prolonging industrial bargaining at a mounting cost to the justice system and is under mounting pressure to make a time to return to the bargaining table,” says PSA.

A solidarity event is also being held on the lawn outside Parliament from 12.45pm.
