More than 350 budding Kane Williamsons and Suzie Bateses are at the Bay Oval today, making up a record number of teams in the annual Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup.

Each of the 36 teams from 23 primary schools from Tauranga and around the Western Bay are representing one of the 93 registered cricket-playing nations, and to add appeal to the occasion they've all been encouraged to dress up in the colours and costumes of their adopted country.

Pahoia School's number one team has won the much sought-after right to wear the colours of New Zealand's Blackcaps at the tournament in a random draw.

Bay of Plenty Cricket are blown away by the popularity of the junior cricket festival, which has grown from just a dozen teams from eight schools at the first event staged 15 years ago at Waipuna Park.
