New award for Tauranga Art Gallery

Tauranga Art Gallery director Karl Chitham at Rydal House

Tauranga Art Gallery, in partnership with Seeds Trust, has announced a new biennial painting award called the Rydal Art Prize.

The winner of the art award will be announced in 2019 with the recipient receiving a $20,000 prize and an exhibition at the Tauranga Art Gallery.

The winner will be selected by a jury of four nationally recognised art professionals, who will remain anonymous until the winner is announced.

The prize will be for work exhibited nationally or internationally during the 24 months prior to January 2019.

Tauranga Art Gallery director, Karl Chitham is excited to be establishing a non-competitive award with the support of Seeds Trust.

'We are privileged to have been chosen by Seeds Trust to be the home of this award and we anticipate some really dynamic deliberations from our panel of talented judges on the way to selecting our inaugural prize recipient.”

With a background in horticulture, Seeds Trust was established in 2011 in the Waikato. Trustees have a love of art and have chosen to name the award after an architecturally beautiful heritage building they own in downtown Tauranga.

In establishing the prize, Seeds Trusts says this prize will enable, through this partnership with Tauranga Art Gallery, a platform for the national recognition of a painter that has contributed in a significant way.

'We want to raise the profile and to add value to the achievements of New Zealand's most exciting painters and their work.”

'This is an opportunity to see and experience work through the prize and subsequent exhibition that may not have been seen by the public before.”
