Bums out for a cure in Tauranga

Last year, more than $3000 was raised for the breast cancer charities, organised by the Bayswater Village women's group, and this year is the men's turn.

The residents are raising money for testicular and prostate cancer research, by posing in and creating a calendar available to purchase.

Events Coordinator for Metlifecare in the Bay of Plenty, Sam Martin, says while ideas were getting tossed around for something that the men could do to fundraise, she came up with the idea to create a calendar.

'The idea for the calendar was to feature the Bayswater Blokes doing the things they love to do every day, but naked!”

Jenny Arnold, president of the Bayswater Residents' Association loved the idea of a calendar and rallied 11 men to participate.

'All were keen as a bean. I am a trained graphic designer/artist so I came up with the scenarios and did the photoshoots, some of which caused quite a stir in the village as they were outside!”

'The men were all really thrilled to be taking part, and as the photoshoots went on, it became clear to all of us that this project was also benefitting and empowering them on so many levels.

'One ‘bloke' remarked to me as I took his photo ‘this proves to everyone that we're not done yet!' By the time I got all 11 blokes together for the December shoot, the camaraderie was evident and the energy was amazing, as was the horseplay and shenanigans as I tried to take their photo!

'I have to say this has been an empowering process for me and one I will never forget.

'After putting my graphic design on the photos, moody black and white with hand-colouring, I designed four different sized calendars all of which can be purchased through me and they range in price from $15 to $22.

'They will be great Christmas gifts, I'm sure of, and of course, all profits go to men's cancer charities.”
