One last shot to save the Te Puke Post Office

Pledges are needed to help raise $50,000 to save the Te Puke Post Office.

In a matter of a few weeks, the Te Puke Post Office may be saved, but they still need to reach their goal to make that happen.

With a letter box drop happening this week, chairperson of the Te Puke Centre Working group, Karen Summerhays says she is hoping that it will encourage people to make a pledge towards the cause.

'There has been a huge amount of interest, but it's interesting that people still don't really know about the project which is quite interesting.”

'We are getting really great feedback, people when they hear about the project they are really excited and see why we have to do it.”

Karen says they have raised a fair bit in donations but are still needing more in order to reach their end goal.

'We have had some good donations coming in, but we just need people to rattle their dags and get their pledges in. They may have made up their mind but they haven't quite got it on to paper.”

The group is also on a short time frame with the fundraising ending on November 25.

'This is the one chance otherwise it will be gone,” says Karen.

'We are in a process with the New Zealand Post and they allowed us to come out of confidentiality to be able to do this fundraising so that's why it's such a short time frame.”

'By the end of the month we have to indicate to the NZ Post whether we are in the game or not and I think the thing that maybe people aren't connecting with is that the reason to get this across the line with the post office, is that it will help support the centre that means it will be less reliant on the council and ratepayers to help make the centre work.”

'We are trying to be as self-sufficient as we can and not be a burden on anybody.”

Karen says they are keeping the faith and keeping positive about the donations for the post office.

'The main goal is to get across that main goal of the $50,000 mark, we are getting paper pledges as well as ones on the site.”

'The post office has always been a bumping place in town, and it is an essential piece of community kit.”

With the alignment with the Te Puke centre merging with the post office if the project goes ahead, it will be a main meeting point in town, but as Karen says, the first thing that people need to do is to make a pledge.

Te Puke Centre: not registered charities not registered societies not registered companies office not approved by ird for donee status? constitution? How can donation rebates be issued for monies going toward purchase of a business? Just like other towns, post offices amalgamate with chemists, news agents, other store fronts...... Be surprising if other parties have not shown interest? "self-sufficient as we can and not be a burden on anybody" 50000 dollars from a small community for a business purchase is not a burden? if an existing business took it on, there would be no community burden. If post office is not sustainable as it is, "supposedly pending closure", how could it also support a charity and paid staff? and how will this group raise business balance with no funder support for business purchase?
