Tauranga’s mystery noise still a conundrum

There's still been no word on what the mystery noise is that has been puzzling Tauranga residents recently.

SunLive has reached out to GeoNet and the Defence Force, but have had no answer as to what the noise was.

A few people have contacted SunLive, including Matua resident Russell, who doesn't want his last name used, saying they have heard a strange noise in all different parts of the city.

Russell says it got him wondering outside around his property, trying to locate the source of the noise at 9.30 at night.

'As I was getting into bed, I said to my wife ‘can you hear a strange noise?' not thinking for a second that she would say yes.

'I got up, out of bed and went outside, had a look around and it was the weirdest thing, the noise, as what I would describe as half-way between an electrical buzz and a grinding of steel.

'I was outside for about five minutes and the weird thing was that it didn't change volume.

'In other words, when I went outside, it didn't get any louder when I swung my head around, trying to figure out where it was coming from.

'It had no direction, it was almost like it was coming up from within the ground,” says Russell.

SunLive has also contacted Tauranga City Council to see if they have information regarding the strange noise.

I am pretty certain you are all hearing the noise from the Port operations. We hear it a lot, especially on still nights, and we are up the hills of Welcome Bay. I have always wondered how they are allowed to make so much noise without breaching their consents.

It’s Tinnitus. Even TCC should know that, but I’m guessing they fobbed you off and then employed some security to stand guard in case ET came by.
