Firefighters are at the scene of a gas leak in Mount Maunganui.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communication shift manager Craig Daily says a gas main was reported as struck on Maunganui Road near Rata Street at about 2.48pm.
'A contractor hit the gas main with a spade.
'We have responded, cordoned off the area and are waiting for contractors to arrive.”
Police say road closures are in place on Maunganui Road, Tauranga between Salisbury Ave and Rata Street.
"Diversions are in place but motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible."
