The Bay of Plenty has been receiving a hammering, after wild 24 hours of weather causing trees and other items to fall on the road.

Earlier yesterday evening, State Highway 2 was shut down following large rock falls and slips through the Karangahake Gorge.

The road has now been opened to one lane.

According to the New Zealand Transport Agency traffic management is in place.
