Fortnite used as educational tool in Te Puke

Students in year 9 and 10 at Te Puke High School are taking place in a Fortnite tournament to win $3000 worth of prizes.

Popular online game Fortnite is being used to teach Te Puke High School business students.

The school is currently hosting an Esport tournament with $3000 worth in prizes up for grabs.

The Fortnite competition has dozens of year 9 and 10 students taking part all of a chance of winning the prizes donated by Harvey Norman and PB Tech.

Fortnite is an online game first released in 2017 and the games success has been global. The game developers released a mobile version earlier this year and for a period of time was reportedly making $2 million a day, and a total of more than $300 million as of October, on iOS alone.

The tournament is part of a year 10 business assignment, where students had to plan and market an event, says IT technician Armand Devilliers.

Armand says they've got around 120 students register for the tournament.

The staff has also rallied together a team to compete in the tournament.

A livestream has also been set up on YouTube, in a way for the students to promote their event and as Armand says a way to get it out there and so teachers can play it on the projectors in the classrooms.

The tournament is already underway with the playoffs set to take place at around 1.30pm and prize giving held straight afterwards.
