A section of State Highway 2, through the Karangahake Gorge, will remain under a 24/7 stop/go traffic management until mid-next week.
Crews are working to stablise the rock face following last weekend's slip.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time in their journey if they are travelling through the area.
NZTA says contractors are working on clearing the slip which is made up of boulders, some the size of small cars.
'Engineers are assessing the stability of the site and are working as hard as they can to get the job done as soon as possible.
'Until all assessments have been completed and we are satisfied we can re-open the road safely to two lanes we will continue to operate with one lane under stop/go management into the working week.”

Confirmation that there really is a very serious need to four-lane the road between Paeroa and Tauranga. And don't tell me that NZTA is acting independently of the current government, because they are just doing what they are told.

Where is the four lane going to go when it gets to the Gorge? Where is the four lane going to go through the entire length of the Gorge?

About 25 years ago when I lived in McKaytown there were 4 different plans made to bypass the gorge. But none of them went ahead, it must have cost a considerable amount of money, Meatings were held etc.How much more will be wasted on only making plans and do nothing?
