The Tauranga Women's Refuge celebrated their community relationships and supporters with an end of year fundraiser held at the Tauranga Citizen Club.
The Black & White Gala Fundraiser featured an auction and raffles with prizes donated by Mitre 10 Gate Pa, Z Petrol Te Puke, Bed Bath & Beyond, Classic Flyers and Unichem Brookfield Pharmacy.

Labour List MP Angie Warren-Clark, who was the manager of the Women's Refuge before taking on her parliamentary role, spoke at the event and presented the prizes.

'I'm here tonight to support the Women's Refuge fundraiser,” says Angie. 'One in three women are affected by violence so it's really important that we get behind the refuge with these fundraisers and support them.”

Tauranga Te Papa Rotary members Alan and Sharon Hitchcock also attended the fundraiser. Tauranga Te Papa Rotary partnered with Zonta in 2018 to fundraise for Tauranga Women's Refuge with a successful Melbourne Cup Charity Auction and Long lunch event held in November.

Tauranga Women's Refuge was established in 1980 to provide a safe place for women and their children needing a safe place as result of domestic violence, whether it be physical, emotional or psychological.

The refuge receives approximately 38 per cent of total funding from Ministry of Social Development and Ministry of Justice to provide a 24-hour crisis phone line, safe house shelter, community based advocacy, information, education, awareness services and programs, free counselling, Kaupapa Maori Women's and Children's program and Whanau Protect - a safe at home service.

Approximately 62 per cent of total funding comes via the generosity and goodwill of philanthropists, fundraising, sponsorship, funding support from local service clubs, gaming trusts, local government, and businesses.
