Avoiding online theft

In an age where being ‘busy' is becoming the norm, internet shopping can be a godsend for those wishing to skip the Christmas queues.

But for others, the online world can be a minefield of scamming and dodgy deals.

Find yourself fleeced for a few hundred dollars, during what is already a financially challenging time of year, and it could be a recipe for a disaster.

That is why NetSafe has provided some tips for smarter shopping and safer online activity this festive season.

'When shopping online, we need to be careful about who we're buying from and the information we're giving out,” says a NetSafe spokesperson.

'The last thing anyone wants is a dud deal, products that never show up, or credit card details in the wrong hands. With a bit of know-how and planning, you can be smarter and safer when shopping online.”

The online safety organisation recommends a number of easy tips.

Getting your security basics right is a must. This includes using trusted wifi connections, choosing strong passwords and setting up two-factor authentication.

Spending wisely is another key tip, and NetSafe encourages shoppers to do this by looking for a padlock symbol in their browser window.

'Use credit cards or well-respected payment services such as PayPal,” they add. 'Also, use disposable credit cards, avoid saving payment details and check card statements regularly.”

NetSafe also recommends checking over websites by asking for others' thoughts or reviews.

You can also check the authenticity of sites and do background checks on domain information.

The organisation also has some key advice on what to do in the worst case scenario.
