Police have today released the name of the man who died on Mimiha Road in Matata, on Saturday afternoon.

He was 52-year-old John Lickfold, of Rotorua.

Emergency services were called to the Burt Brothers Trail Ride track just after 12pm.

According to the Matata Volunteer Fire Brigade Facebook page, a small crew was dispatched up Mimiha Road to assist.

'We assisted on-site medics and then two road and on helicopter crew in attending to a patient suffering from what looked like a medical event.”

Fire and Emergency northern communications shift manager Scott Osmond says one person is deceased after falling off their motorbike at the Burt Brothers Trail Ride track.

'We extend our sympathies to his family and friends at this difficult time,” says a police spokesperson.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
