Gallipoli, Spielberg and the weather

In today's weather forecast we are expecting a fine day apart from some morning cloud. Also light winds and sea breezes.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 27 and an overnight low of 16 degrees. Humidity is 91 per cent.

Low tide is at 9.30am and high tide at 3.50pm(Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.4m and sea temperature is 20 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.30pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 8.30 and 10.30pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1642 was the first known encounter between Māori and Europeans. Abel Tasman's Dutch East India Company expedition had the first known European contact with Māori.

In 1988 Air New Zealand women cabin crew won an anti-discrimination case. Air New Zealand was found to be in breach of the Human Rights Act after over a decade of female cabin crew campaigning for the same opportunities as male workers at the airline.

On this day in world history in 1812 Napoleon Bonaparte arrived in Paris after his disastrous campaign in Russia.

In 1865 slavery was abolished in the United States. The 13th Amendment was formally adopted into the U.S. Constitution, ensuring that 'neither slavery nor involuntary servitude… shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

In 1915 in a single night, about 20,000 Australian and New Zealand troops withdraw from Gallipoli, Turkey, undetected by the Turks defending the peninsula.

In 1940 Adolf Hitler issued his secret plans for the invasion of the Soviet Union–Operation Barbarossa. In 1941 defended by 610 fighting men, the American-held island of Guam fell to more than 5,000 Japanese invaders in a three-hour battle.

In 1941 Japan invaded Hong Kong. In 1942 Adolf Hitler met with Benito Mussolini and Pierre Laval.

In 1956 Japan was admitted to the United Nations. In 2008 the United Arab Emirates held it first-ever elections.

Today is the birthday of 1946 film director Steven Spielberg. Born in 1946 he once said 'Our one goal is to give the world a taste of peace, friendship, and understanding through the visual arts, the art of celebration of life.”
