Police can now release the name of the man who died following a serious crash in Acacia Bay on Thursday 27 December.

He was 77-year-old Michael John Wellington of Taupo.

Police extend their condolences to his friends and family, says a police spokesperson.

"The Serious Crash Unit investigation is ongoing."

The single-vehicle crash occurred on Acacia Heights Drive in Acacia Bay, around 6.10pm on Thursday December 27.

"The driver was taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition," says police in a statement.

"He died on Sunday December 30."

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
