The pursuit was initiated just before midnight. File photo.

Tauranga Police were forced to abandon a pursuit in the city overnight because of “the nature of the driving”.

A witness to the chase says he saw a vehicle being followed by police on Cameron Road, near 15th Ave, around midnight.

He says the offending vehicle almost had a head on crash with him as he was driving northbound towards the city centre.

“I managed to swerve just meters before it would have impacted with my vehicle.”

A police spokesperson confirmed to SunLive that a vehicle fled police on Cameron Road just before midnight.

“Police followed but abandoned within a minute because of the nature of the driving.

“Follow-up enquiries will be made to locate the vehicle and driver.”

Anyone with information about the pursuit or the offending driver can contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.
