In today's weather forecast we are expecting a few showers, with a chance of them being heavy and thundery. Also light winds.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 23 and an overnight low of 17 degrees. Humidity is 96 per cent.

High tide is at 2.10pm and low tide at 8.40pm (Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.6m and sea temperature is 21 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.35pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1970 Vietnam War protesters greeted United States Vice-President Spiro Agnew. His three-day visit to New Zealand sparked some of the most violent anti-Vietnam War demonstrations seen in this country.

On this day in world history in 1624 riots flared in Mexico when it was announced that all churches were to be closed.

Today is the birthday of Edward Teller, Hungarian-born U.S. physicist known as the 'Father of the H-bomb.” He was born in 1908 and once said 'We must learn to live with contradictions, because they lead to deeper and more effective understanding.”

It's also the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights leader and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Born in 1929, he once said 'Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
