In today's weather forecast we are expecting a mainly fine day with some gusty southwesterlies.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 28 and an overnight low of 15 degrees. Humidity is 66 per cent.

Low tide is at 1.40pm and high tide at 7.50pm (Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.6m and sea temperature is 21 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.33pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 12.30 and 2.30pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1859 ice came to Nelson, delivered by boat from Melbourne.

In 1889 American daredevil ‘Professor' Thomas Baldwin parachuted from a balloon floating high above South Dunedin.

In 1944 New Zealand and Australia signed the Canberra Pact. The pact was an undertaking by the two countries to co-operate on international matters, especially in the Pacific.

On this day in world history in 1790 Joseph Guillotine proposed a new, more humane method of execution: a machine designed to cut off the condemned person's head as painlessly as possible.

In 1921 J.D. Rockefeller pledged $1 million for the relief of Europe's destitute.

In 1976 Leonid Brezhnev and Henry Kissinger met to discuss the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT). In 1977 President Carter urged 65 degrees Fahrenheit (equivalent to 18.3 degrees Celsius) as the maximum heat in homes to ease the energy crisis.
