Papamoa Beach goers got more than they bargained for on their public holiday.

At 2pm on Monday, a tree snapped and fell on to two vehicles in the carpark near the surf club.

Julie Grantham, a member of the public, saw the accident unfold.

'While I was getting my gear out of the car, there was a loud cracking sound as the tree snapped and fell onto the vehicles in the carpark.

'Two vehicles were damaged. The grey vehicle took a direct hit, sustaining severe damage, suspension, crushed bonnet, I would suspect crushed engine as well as broken front and rear windows.

'The grey vehicle was owned by a Rotorua couple who were there with two young kids. Luckily, they were not in the vehicle at the time and their car was insured.”

Julie says the other vehicle's bonnet was damaged and had a broken windscreen.

Fire services arrived at the scene to remove the tree, but the council arborist took over as the fire department had to attend to another job.

Julie says that the scene had been cleared by 6.30pm.

Those fully grown pine trees were there FIFTY years ago, LONG past their SAFE date! Regretfully, they should ALL be long gone and replaced with NEW plantings.
